We camped on a bench above an exceptionally beautiful side canyon.
From there we hiked down the gulch. The walls came closers and closer until we reached some narrows, which turned out to be deeper than the guide book suggested.

The creek falls into this set of narrows. We climbed out of the canyon and hiked around. |
We climbed out of the canyon, hiked around the narrows, then droped back in. From below we went back up stream to explore the narrows. We came to one pool which we had to swim then could walk along the canyon for a short ways. Then we came to another deep pool. The far side was a choke point in the canyon with a log wedged in it. It looked like we would have to swim to the choke point then pull ourselves out on the log.
Because I've never done anything like this I left my camera behind. The log was easy to get out on and the narrows beyond that very interesting. For some reason the water felt much warmer. At the top end was another pool where the falls droped in to the narrows. We swam this and made a weak attempt to climb the waterfall.
Afterwards we went back, got Marie and my camer, and explored up to the falls again.

Another view. | Me. I decided that I was warmer with out a shirt which would hold the cold water. | ||
Shallow pools in the narrows. |
We continued down the lower gulch. This was more exceptionally beautiful canyon. Also, because of the narrows it was much less traveled. There was thick veggitation on the banks. Often the easiest walking was in the creek bed itself. I wish we had more time to spend in this part.
We found a side canyon and used it to climb out of the lower Gulch. We camped on top of the Wingate.
